NODAK FLICKERTAILS

Over the winter months with mountains of snow piles, North Dakotans headed for warmer
climates. Some went to California, Seattle, Quart Site, Arizona, Florida, Hawaii, North
Carolina and South Carolina. In addition, others stayed home, weathered the winter
weather, and gathered for lunch and dinner throughout the long winter months.
The first campout was at Fort Abraham Lincoln State Park in Mandan, ND, but the weekend
also included its sister city, Bismarck. We met Friday, June 1, 2007. The weekend hosts
for this outing were Jerry and Betty Nelson and Dave and Dorothy Pokorny. Twenty-four
members met to explore the rich history in both early Native American and military
history. Members went on guided tours of the Custer House, the museum, the commissary and
other buildings. We also visited the ancient On-A-Slant Mandan Indian Village with
reconstructed earthlodges. Interestingly enough, when going on the various tours, the
interpreters are dressed in clothing from the past.
Saturday afternoon we met at the campsite and caravan to Bismarck, to take a cruise on
the Lewis and Clark Riverboat for 1.5 hours. When the cruise was over, right at the dock
was Captain Meriwether’s restaurant where we dined for the evening. The night ended with
the women talking and telling jokes and the men surrounded the campfire.
At the business meeting, we discussed future camping plans and the upcoming activities
for participation at GNR. We elected the officers for 2007-2008.

The club was fortunate enough to have Lew and Karen Dendy of Bismarck join the club as
new members and they are planning to go to GNR. Harlan and Adam went fishing and caught
the “big fish” of the day. It was a great outing, relaxed, and spending time with
friends. Thanks to our hosts for planning the weekend. Sunday came too quickly and it
was time to leave the Bismarck-Mandan area, to travel safely, to give hugs and say
good-bye.
